The ex-hospital of San Giuseppe in the historical centre of Empoli houses the Degree course in Urban, regional and landscape planning, and the Second-cycle degree course in Urban and regional planning and design.

The construction of the complex began around the year 1750 on the preexisting structure of a Medicean fortress, of which traces of the old walls and the Righi Tower can still be seen.

The structure used to be the ancient fortress, which was either erected or enlarged by Cosimo I, and later converted into an insane asylum.
